Start at Abbesses
Begin around Place des Abbesses to enter Montmartre through an active neighbourhood rather than arriving directly at the summit. The surrounding streets introduce the area’s cafés, small squares and steep terrain.
Climb through the historic streets
Choose a gradual route through streets such as rue des Abbesses and the lanes toward Place du Tertre. Avoid blocking residential doorways and remember that some of the most photographed corners are still local homes.
Visit Place du Tertre and Sacré-Cœur
Place du Tertre is known for artists and dense visitor activity. Continue to Sacré-Cœur for the basilica exterior and the broad city view from the steps. Interior access follows its own rules.

Descend by a different route
Do not retrace every step. Descend toward Lamarck-Caulaincourt or through quieter eastern streets for a second perspective and an easier connection to the metro.
- Check official opening hours and ticket requirements on the day of your visit.
- Wear comfortable shoes and keep valuables secure in crowded areas.
- The guided walking tours currently listed by Meet, Drink & Party are conducted in English and last approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
